What is Outplacement?

Outplacement, sometimes referred to as Transition Services, is a service paid for by employer’s/companies. Outplacement services help transition employees to new jobs once their employment has been terminated. These companies care about their staff even after they have exited the company and therefore invest in these services to better help the person find employment more easily.

There are many reasons why an employer would offer outplacement to its staff.

  • Brand reputation
  • Staff morale
  • The right thing to do

An outside business or consultant delivers the outplacement services to the former employees. These services are provided either on a one on one basis or in a group setting. There are a variety of topics covered in outplacement can include:

  • Job search skills
  • Resume writing
  • Interview preparation and more

Outplacement programs do have set time limits that can range from a few months to upwards of a year. The length of time of the service is dependent upon the employer’s budget allotment for that employee.
