Detailed analysis and forecast of the Acetone Market on a global and regional level 2014 – 2020

The report starts with an overview & value chain of Acetone market , Acetone is mainly used in production of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and Bisphynol- A (BPA). It is also used as a solvent in manufacturing various chemicals. MMA due to its hardness and flexibility, is mainly used in preparation of plastic sheets, in cosmetic industry to make your nails look better. MMA also find medical uses in dentistry, as it is not harmful to skin in solid state,it’s used to make crown and bridges. BPA acts as ingredient in manufacturing of polycarbonate resin and epoxy resin which finds wide applications in eye lens glasses, medical equipment, water bottles etc.

Acetone is a co-product of phynol, is derived via cumene peroxidation process. Acetone is also known as dimethyl ketone and is clear in colour. The liquid and its vapour is highly flammable, volatile and combustible in nature. It ismainly used as an ingredient in manufacture of acetone cyanohydrin for methyl methacrylate (MMA), bisphenol A (BPA) and aldol chemicals. It is also used as a direct solvent in industrial application. Technical grade acetone is 99% pure and is commonly used chemical with variety of applications in cosmetics, business, home, laboratories etc.

Methyl methacrylate (MMA) originated in dental industry to make crown and bridges. Due to its nature, in liquid state MMA should not come in contact with skin, however in solid state it can be handled very easily and hence is used by orthopaedic doctors for joint replacement procedures. In late 70s some nail technicians started using MMA to make acrylic nails as it was cheaper compared to the other alternatives. Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial substances used to make polycarbonate resins and epoxy resins. The glossy sales receipts we receive from billing agents can contain BPA as a component of heat sensitive coating that allows for inkless printing. Epoxy resins find application in food packaging and storage which is essential to maintain and enhance the safety of our food supply. Healthcare providers highly depend on medical devices made up from BPA to keep watch on presence of air bubbles or other barriers during medical procedures. Other applications of BPA are in safety equipment’s, electronics in industrial and in business.

The global consumption of acetone was estimated to be approximately 5.92 million tons in 2014, and is anticipated to reach approximately 7 million tons growing at a CAGR of 3% through 2020.

Application wise, 31% of the acetone produced worldwide is consumed by BPA producers and is anticipated to continue the trend through 2020. Approximately 26% of the acetone produced is used as solvent in industrial applications. However, use of acetone to manufacture BPA is foreseen to surpass others by growing at a CAGR of 4.2% through 2020.

APAC accounted for 41% of the world consumption of acetone in 2014. Increasing standard of living and income levels has resulted in growth of automobile and medical industry in APAC. This in turn has boosted the demand for acetone in APAC. Demand for acetone is expected to increase significantly in Latin America and Middle East and North Africa. Middle East, due to increasing construction activities and medical sector is anticipated to grow at effective CAGR of 3% through 2020.

Key market players of acetone industry are Dow chemical company, BASF, INEOS Phenol GmBH, CEPSA QUIMICA, Shell Chemicals, Mitsui Chemicals, Reliance Chemicals, Honeywell and LG. Tokyo based Mitsui Chemical Inc. and Sinopec recently announced the start-up of world’s largest phynol and acetone plant at Shanghai China under their joint venture Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Elastomers Co Ltd (SSME). Small players also have massive plans of expanding their acetone production capacities owing to its increased usage in industrial and other applications.

China, a major consumer and producer of acetone worldwide is anticipated to plunge its imports during the second half of 2015. This can be attributed to the increasing domestic phenol- acetone capacity, and start-up of new plants owned by Shanghai Sinopec Mitsui Chemicals, CEPSA Quimica, and Formosa Chemicals & Fibre Corp. These three plants located in eastern china have phenol capacity of producing 800000 tonnes of acetone per year. Imports of acetone in china is questionable if international players do not willingness to match the prices of the domestic acetone producer.
