Aniline Market Research Analysis 2020 Industry Survey, Comprehensive Analysis and Growth Trends
Aniline, also known as phenylamine or aminobenzene, is an aromatic amine produced by successive nitration and hydrogenation of benzene in the presence of a metal catalyst. It is used primarily in the production of MDI (Methylene diphenyl diisocyanate). MDI is further employed in the manufacture of polyurethane foams, elastomers, adhesives and sealants. Large volume share of aniline produced globally is utilized in the manufacture of MDI. Furthermore, aniline is used in the manufacture of several rubber processing chemicals, dyes & pigments, organic specialty fibers and agricultural intermediates. Polyurethane foam produced using aniline as a precursor is used in various applications. For instance, it is used in the manufacture of shoe soles, automotive and household upholstery, and insulating parts of electronic appliances. Aniline also yields superior rubber processing chemicals; thus, the aniline market is expected to grow at a fast rate during the forecast period.

Increasing demand for MDI in the CASE (coatings, adhesives, sealants and elastomers) industry and the polyurethane industry has boosted the aniline market. This trend is anticipated to continue during the forecast period. Polyurethane foam is used extensively in the automotive and household upholstery industries in the manufacture of automobile seats and mattresses, respectively. Additionally, rigid foams are used as insulation in refrigerators and other electronic appliances. Aniline is used to manufacture a variety of rubber processing chemicals such as vulcanization accelerators and antiozonants. This is likely to augment the sales of aniline during the forecast period. However, adverse health and environmental effects of aniline are projected to hamper market growth during the forecast period. Usage of aniline as corrosion inhibitors in the microelectronics industry is expected to provide new growth opportunities for the aniline market during the forecast period.
In terms of volume, MDI accounted for over 75% of the global aniline market, while other applications such as rubber processing chemicals, and dyes & pigments held the remaining market share in 2013. MDI is anticipated to lose its market share marginally to other applications by 2020. Demand for aniline-derived rubber processing chemicals such as vulcanization accelerators, inhibitors, anti-degradants and stabilizers has been increasing due to the growth of the global rubber industry. Demand for aniline for dyes & pigments is also projected to rise during the forecast period.

In terms of end-use, insulation accounted for over 45% of the global aniline market volume share in 2013. The insulation market is likely to witness steady growth during the forecast period. Rubber products are estimated to lose their share to consumer goods, packaging and other applications of aniline in the next few years. Consumer goods is projected to be the fastest growing application segment of aniline during the forecast period.
Asia Pacific is expected to be the fastest growing and dominant region in terms of aniline production, followed by countries in Rest of the World (RoW) such as Brazil and Australia. A large number of aniline plants have been commissioned in China in the recent past. These are estimated to be operational during the forecast period. For instance, in March 2011, BASF SE announced plans to build a Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) plant with a capacity of 400 kilo tons per year in Chongqing, China. The company invested US$ 1.09 Bn in the plant, which is projected to commence operations from 2014. This facility would comprise an MDI plant, a nitrobenzene plant, and an aniline plant. In terms of end-use, the aniline market can be divided into six segments: insulation, rubber products, consumer goods, automotive, packaging, and others. Consumer goods and packaging are likely to be the fastest growing end-use segments of aniline during the forecast period.

The aniline market is highly consolidated with key players integrated across several stages of the value chain. BASF SE, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, Huntsman Corporation, E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company and Wanhua Chemical Group Co Ltd. are some of the major companies operating in the market. Other companies include Jilin Connell Chemical Industry Co., Ltd., Tosoh Corporation, The Dow Chemical Company, SP Chemicals Holdings Ltd and Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd. The aniline market is characterized by mergers and acquisitions. For instance, Wanhua Chemical Group Co. Ltd. acquired BorsodChem, a Hungary-based producer of isocyanate, in February 2011. The acquisition would help Wanhua Chemical Group Co Ltd. strengthen its position in the aniline end-user market in Europe. Similarly, Bayer MaterialScience LLC purchased E. I. du Pont de Nemours and Company’s aniline production facility in Baytown, Texas, in March 2014. The acquisition is expected to strengthen the company’s leadership position in the polyurethane industry in the U.S.
