Benzaldehyde Market growing due to Importance of Asset Management in Industry
Benzaldehyde, an organic compound, is prepared by oxidation of toluene or treating benzal chloride with an alkali such as sodium hydroxide. It is typically used in the synthesis of other organic compounds that include flavors and fragrances, drug intermediaries, dyes, coatings, agrochemicals, and others (resins, etc.). These chemical compounds and their derivatives are used in end-user industries such as aroma chemicals, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, dyes, coatings, and others (resins, etc.). Rising demand for benzaldehyde products in these end-user industries is expected to drive the global benzaldehyde market in the next few years.
Benzaldehyde is a colorless liquid with a pleasant almond fragrance. It is an organic compound that consists of a benzene ring with a formyl substituent. Petroleum is the major source of benzaldehyde. It also occurs naturally from almond or cherry stone using an enzyme. It is manufactured by hydrolysis of benzal chloride and air oxidation of toluene. Air oxidation of toluene is the most widely accepted process for extracting synthetic benzaldehyde. It includes both vapor- and liquid-phase air oxidation processes. Vapor-phase process was primarily used during the 1950s and 1960s; however, this process is not industrially important anymore. Currently, liquid-phase process is extensively used. Both benzaldehyde and benzoic acid are recovered during the process. The Dow Chemical Company developed this process and introduced it in the 1950s. Benzaldehyde recovered via liquid-phase process is purified by either batch or continuous distillation.

Based on end-user industry, the benzaldehyde market can be classified into aroma chemicals, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, coatings, and others (dyes, etc.). Aroma chemicals and agriculture are key end-user segments of the benzaldehyde market and accounted for over 60% of the total market share in 2014. The aroma chemicals segment is essentially driven by unique properties of benzaldehyde such as artificial cherry and almond flavors. Furthermore, benzaldehyde is also used as key ingredient in the manufacture of certain flavored and fragrance chemicals such as cinnamic acid and cinnamaldehyde. Thus, demand for benzaldehyde is expected to increase by the end of 2023.
In terms of demand, aroma chemicals was the largest end-user segment of the benzaldehyde market in 2014. Benzaldehyde can be categorized into two primary categories: technical grade and FCC grade. Technical grade is commonly used as intermediate in the manufacture of odorants and flavoring chemicals. Benzaldehyde is also directly used as a flavoring agent, especially for introducing artificial almond and cherry flavors. Benzaldehyde of FCC grade is widely used in flavors such as almond and cherry and as fragrances in soaps and toiletries. The FDA has sanctioned benzaldehyde as a synthetic flavoring substance that is generally recognized as safe (GRAS). Agriculture was the second-largest end-user segment of the benzaldehyde market in 2014. Demand for benzaldehyde in this segment is rising due to increased usage of benzaldehyde in various pesticides and herbicides, especially in developing countries such as China and India. Other end-user segments such as coatings and pharmaceuticals are likely to exhibit higher demand for benzaldehyde in the near future.

In terms of region, Asia Pacific held the largest share of over 50% of the benzaldehyde market in 2014. Demand for benzaldehyde in the region is estimated to rise at a faster rate by the end of 2023 due to large consumption base, growth of various end-user industries, and lenient governmental regulations. In terms of demand, China, India, and Japan are projected to dominate the benzaldehyde market in Asia Pacific. Europe accounted for the second-largest share of the benzaldehyde market in 2014. Benzaldehyde market in the European region is expected to remain flat in 2023 due to matured applications and low product innovations. North America is anticipated to depict slow growth, as in last decade no new innovation is been reported and penetration of benzaldehyde in various end-user industry is reduced.
Key market players include Emerald Performance Materials, LLC, Lanxess AG, Jiangsu Jiamai Chemical Co., Ltd., Gujarat Alkalies and Chemicals Limited, and Haihang Industries Co., Ltd.
