Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Market 2020 : Analysis and Information for Every Aspact of the Industry
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) , also known as Sodium dodecyl Sulfate (SDS), is a salt of organosulfate. In order to mitigate the corrosive nature of SLS, it is ethoxylated to produce sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES). Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate (LAS) is an anionic surfactant widely used in detergents and cleaners. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium lauryl ether sulfate are mostly used in personal care products such as shampoos, toothpastes, and shower gels. SLS, SLES and LAS are the major forms of anionic surfactants.
Major application of SLS, SLES & LAS is detergents & cleaners, especially for household applications. Hence, rising demand for household detergents globally is estimated to boost the market growth of SLS, SLES & LAS. However, hazardous effects of SLS & SLES on human skin are projected to hamper market growth. Furthermore, the shift towards bio-based surfactants, especially in developed countries, is likely to restrain the growth of the linear alkylbenzene sulfonate market in the near future. Emerging applications such as paints & coatings and oilfield chemicals are estimated to offer immense opportunities for players in the market.
Linear alkylbenzene sulfonate is the most preferred surfactant among detergent and personal care product manufacturers than SLS and SLES, due to its low price and less toxic nature. In 2013, linear alkylbenzene sulfonate accounted for nearly 76.6% of the global SLS, SLES & LAS market in terms of volume. However, as LAS is a purely petrochemical-derived surfactant, SLS and SLES have gradually started replacing LAS. Nevertheless, SLS and SLES also have disadvantages and these are likely to be replaced by bio-based surfactants in the coming years. Sodium lauryl sulfate is available in two forms: SLS liquid and SLS dry. However, SLS liquid is more preferred as it is easily soluble and relatively cheaper.

Detergents & cleaners application was the largest consumer of SLS, SLES and LAS in 2013. These anionic surfactants have excellent dispersion, and cleansing and foaming properties. Hence, they are not easily replaced by other surfactants for detergents & cleaners application. SLS, SLES & LAS form an important constituent of detergents, as their efficiency is higher even at lower concentrations as compared to other surfactants. Detergents & cleaners application was followed by personal care, which is anticipated to grow at a moderate rate in the next five years. Sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium lauryl ether sulfate are predominantly used in personal care applications due to their high skin penetration properties. However, demand for SLS in the personal care application is estimated to decrease in the next few years due to the toxic effects of SLS. Other applications include paints & coatings, agricultural chemicals, plastics, etc. The global market for other applications was valued at USD 527.4 million in 2013.
China and Rest of Asia Pacific dominated the global SLS, SLES & LAS market in 2013, together accounting for nearly 42% of global demand in terms of volume. Increasing production of detergents & personal care products has been driving the market in Asia Pacific over the past few years. Additionally, rising disposable income in the Middle East, Brazil, etc. is boosting Rest of the world market. Rest of the world emerged as the second-largest consumer of SLS, SLES and LAS in 2013. The market in Europe and North America has reached maturation; hence, these regions are expected to grow at a sluggish rate during the forecast period.
