Are Your Teeth Sensitive to Hot and Cold Beverage and Food?

There’s nothing better than sipping a cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter night or drinking a cold glass of lemonade or eating ice cream on a hot summer afternoon, unless you have a tooth sensitive to a hot or cold beverage or food. In most cases, tooth sensitivity is a result of an underlying dental issue that needs to be resolved.

Cavities, Cracks and Unstable Fillings
Tooth decay can advance to cavities where there’s bacterial growth in the mouth which produce acids that destroy enamel. Erosion of the enamel allows the acid to reach the soft dentin layer and cause tooth sensitivity. The same goes with cracked tooth where the dentin is exposed which causes intermittent when you eat or drink food with extreme temperature. The weak filling can also allow cold or hot food and beverage and even bacteria to leak into the tooth. Tooth sensitivity is usually caused by worn down enamel, which is a hard surface layer the protects the inner layers of your teeth which are sensitive from excessive pressure.  The enamel acts as a barrier to protect the teeth from accumulated plaque and abrasive food. Receding Gums
This is also known as tooth recession. In this case, the sensitive roots of the teeth are sensitive to extreme temperatures. Gum collapse is mostly caused by gingivitis and smoking. Crooked teeth, which are hard to clean, also increased the risk of developing receding gums. Remember, gum diseases lead to periodontitis and weakening of bone and gum tissue that support the teeth. Make sure to brush your teeth twice a day, every day and floss your teeth once a day. Proper oral care is helpful to prevent receding gums.

Luckily, there are a lot of ways to prevent tooth sensitivity from ruining your favorite seasonal drinks and food. Here are some steps to help you prevent and alleviate pain and also improve your overall oral health:
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and desensitizing toothpaste, which helps by blocking the spread of uncomfortable to the nerve.
Regular oral exams and teeth cleanings, at least every six months, which can detect gum and teeth issues that lead to sensitive teeth.
Use a fluoride gel, which can strengthen the enamel. A fluoride gel toothpaste is used after a cleaning or dental whitening procedures. It has been shown to help decrease tooth sensitivity.
Dentist highly recommended to use a straw when drinking acidic beverages.
Avoid brushing teeth 30 minutes after an acidic meal.

Experiencing occasional tooth sensitivity is not a reason to freak out, but chronic sensitive teeth can’t only spoil the fun of eating and drinking certain beverage and food but it can also lead to more pain if it’s left untreated.
